Construction
This hat is knit in the round from the bottom up, starting with a doubled ribbed brim. The ribbing is worked twice the desired length and folded, using live stitches from a provisional cast-on for the inner layer and the main needle for the outer layer. The body features two-color double knitting, alternating knit 1, purl 1 between the inner and outer layers. Each chart stitch represents two: one for each layer, with colors switching as shown in the chart. For the crown, decreases begin on both layers, then finish each layer separately to close the hat.
Finished Dimensions
The hats unstretched circumference: 20¼” (51.5 cm) and finished length: 8½” (21.5 cm). Hat fits head sizes: 20-22” (51-56 cm).
Yarn Usage
You’ll need 170 yards (155 meters) of fingering weight yarn in two different colors. This amounts to 2 skeins of Brooklyn Tweed Loft, with one skein in each color. Each 50-gram skein of Loft contains 275 yards (251 meters).
Sample is photographed in Tones (Goldfinch Undertone)(C1) and Loft (Woodsmoke)(C2).
Gauge
23 stitches & 37 rounds per 4”/10 cm in double-knit stockinette, after blocking
Note: Gauge is counted over just a single layer of the double-knit fabric. 46 stitches would be worked to achieve 23 stitches of the inner or outer layer of fabric over 4”/10 cm.
Needles
Suggested Size: US 3 / 3.25 mm / 16”/40 cm circular needle
