 ..............................

The iconic Breton stripe traces its roots to the traditional uniform of the French navy, where its bold lines served a practical purpose at sea. In the early 20th century, Coco Chanel embraced this nautical style after time spent along the French coast, introducing it into women’s fashion. Her interpretation transformed a functional garment into a relaxed yet sophisticated staple, now widely recognized as a symbol of effortless elegance and coastal-inspired style.

Fit Guide
This design is intended to be worn with approximately 10–18 cm of positive ease for a relaxed silhouette. Measure your chest (or widest upper body point) and add your preferred ease to determine the best size.

For example, a 94 cm chest would suit size 3, providing around 12 cm of ease. For a looser fit, consider sizing up. Lengths are adjustable—try on as you go and customize to your preference.

Needles & Notions

  • Circular needles: 3 mm (40 cm) for neckline ribbing
  • Extra 3 mm circular needle for folded neckline edge
  • Circular needles: 3 mm and 3.5 mm (80–100 cm)
  • Double-pointed needles: 3 mm and 3.5 mm (optional if using Magic Loop)

  • Stitch holders
  • Scrap yarn for provisional work

Gauge
24 stitches x 36 rounds = 10 × 10 cm in stockinette stitch, using 3.5 mm needles.

Swatch should be worked in the round and measured after blocking.
Note: Adjust needle size as needed to achieve gauge.

Construction
The Breton Tee is worked from the top down. It begins with a ribbed neckline and a folded edge for a polished finish. The upper yoke is shaped using short rows before continuing with patterned stripe work and increases guided by a chart.

After completing the yoke, additional raglan increases create a well-shaped fit through the shoulders and armholes. The work is then divided into body and sleeves, which are finished separately.

All edges are completed with twisted ribbing and a clean tubular bind-off for a refined result.
