Slow Fashion: Why Hand-Knitted Clothing Is a Great Contribution to Sustainability

An Interview with Paul Pascuali

How to Find the Right Yarn - Yarn Alternatives for Your Knitting Project

Pascuali was founded on the idea of offering top-quality, rare natural wool to retailers and wholesalers worldwide while supporting small farms and farmers in developing countries, both ethically and financially. The company’s goal is to make a positive contribution to society in the area of sustainable textiles through transparency and a fair concept.

Pascuali’s success story began in 2008 with its first yarn quality, mulesing-free merino wool. Since then, the company has innovated and developed constantly, focusing on valuable, sustainable, luxury fibres. Its portfolio includes vegan fibres such as bamboo, corn and stinging nettle, as well as some of the rarest natural fibres in the world, like vicuña and qiviut. Procuring these fibres is not easy, as the animals’ habitats are in almost inaccessible areas.

Sustainability and profitability are not mutually exclusive, and Pascuali is proof of that.

Pascuali is happy to have taken on this challenge, giving customers access to even the rarest of fibres. It is one of the few suppliers of vicuña yarn, the finest fibre in the world, of which only 2 tons are in circulation worldwide. Vicuñas live at an altitude of 4,000 metres above sea level in the mountains of northern Peru. The fibre is produced there by Peruvian farmers and spun to the highest quality as part of an animal welfare project.

For the first eight years of production, Pascuali offered its yarns only to end consumers. This changed in 2016, when the company successfully introduced its yarns to the world at the h+h Cologne international trade fair. That same year, Pascuali moved into its new headquarters in Frechen, Germany.

Since then, the company has worked successfully with yarn studios, hand dyers and world-famous designers. In the spring of 2020, Pascuali released its first Pascuali Fashion collection magazine, with patterns also available on Ravelry.

Also in 2020, Pascuali proudly brought its newest yarn to market: organic cashmere. It comes from Mongolia, where goats are kept in permanent pastures year-round, preventing deforestation. Because high quality, fair trade, sustainable and appropriate animal keeping, and ecologically produced yarns are very important to Pascuali, the company personally and periodically visits its production sites.

Through controlled but steady growth, continuous improvement and a willingness to break new ground, Pascuali has achieved a balance between sustainability and profitability.

Over the years, the company’s transparency and honesty have won people’s trust, and today Pascuali is one of the world’s most sought-after brands in the high-quality yarn segment.

The Pascuali Philosophy
Luxurious, rare yarns of exceptionally high quality distinguish Pascuali’s product range. The company’s intensive work has yielded wonderful yarns with a unique feel, for example from alpaca, cashmere, yak or vicuña.

In addition to absolute quality, species-appropriate animal keeping, fair trade and ecologically manufactured products are very important to Pascuali. The company has deliberately decided against working with intermediaries in order to guarantee a high degree of sustainability.

This keeps Pascuali closer to the product, with high transparency, short trade routes and reliable quality control. The farms on which the animals live are carefully selected at the beginning of product development and visited on site. In addition to wool quality, the focus is on the animals’ living conditions and the working conditions on the farms.

The animals must be able to develop in their natural environment and be treated appropriately. The llamas therefore come from a small farm in northern Argentina, the alpacas have their natural habitat in Peru, the musk oxen live in Alaska, the cashmere goats in Mongolia and the merino sheep in Patagonia.

Before committing to a quality, Pascuali meticulously tests the wool from several farms and then chooses those that meet its high standards. All Pascuali yarns are made from 100% natural fibres.

Because Pascuali primarily supports small farmers and farms, not all of its products are certified. As a rule, these farms cannot afford certifications such as GOTS. To avoid forcing them into financial difficulties, the company does not insist on certificates. Instead, it travels to the respective regions to see the conditions for itself. At the same time, Pascuali’s requirements are often higher than those of most textile certificates.

Pascuali’s yarns are spun to high standards, either directly in the countries where the fibres are sourced or in Italy and Portugal. The company dyes its yarns in accordance with current EU directives and also offers undyed, natural yarns.

Pascuali’s goal is to offer its high-quality products worldwide in order to revolutionise the hand knitting industry in the long term. By continuously supporting social projects and organisations, the company aims to give something back to people and the environment.
